Biting Tongue When I Have Seizures

Thu, 04/27/2017 - 04:18
Hi everyone, before I start I just want to say sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong area but I've never really used forums before! I'm Rachel & I'm 15. I was diagnosed with epilepsy last year and I've had quite a few seizures, that started in July last year. I'm on 100mg Lamotrigine twice a day but I still get seizures. I had one on Monday morning before school and have bitten my tongue really really bad on both sides, and you can see the bite marks all the way down. It's not the first time I've bitten my tongue but out of all the times i have this has got to be the worst. I've tried using Corsodyl which is meant to be good for healing gums and stuff so I thought that might work; it didn't! I've been doing salt water but that's not helping either!! Does anyone know any other ways to heal my tongue quicker?!

well sorry but healing does

well sorry but healing does take time. When I was 7 I fell and when I hit the rail of the bunk bed I cut the inside of my jaw and also slashed my tongue and needed 32-36 stiches. I also knocked out 4 teeth. It took some time but I can't remember how long. I just remember wanting my teeth back 4 more teeth were knocked out about 4-5 months later. SO Christmas song got changed. All I want for Christmas was my 8 front teeth.. How long does it take your arm to heal from a cut??? Time is needed. You will learn how to deal with it and other things. As for your seizures and medications.. As you grow and have been changing medication dosages need to be changed at times. I know I started having a few more seizures when I was your age. I grew extremely fast during 18 months and gained a lot of weight. 4'8" and 85 lbs, to 5'6" and 145 lbs. dosages were changed 4-5 times in those 18 months. So contact your neurologist and see if your dosage needs to be adjusted. especially if no adjustments have been made to them.I hope this helps and you get seizure freeJoe

Hi I have been wondering the

Hi I have been wondering the same thing. I bite my tongue pretty badly when I have seizures. I found most of the regular things people recommend aren't that helpful. Cold stuff like popsicles, ice cream, and ice water usually hurt -ice water is usually the only thing cold I can take. Anything remotely hot or warm is usually a bad idea for me too. Room temp water seems the best and sometimes cold helps with some numbing the pain but not really. Im usually on just water the first day then some liquid foods day 2 and slowly reintroduce soft and solid foods. The only thing I've found that is soothing at all or at least doesn't hurt is concentrated cannabis oil which also helps with some pain. It is similar to CBD oil but is CO2 extracted and looks like olive oil. I've heard people take a spoonful or more of liquid coconut oil (fractionated or MCT oil etc) and swish it around their mouth like mouthwash and then spit it out. Supposed to detox or clean your mouth? I imagine that would feel soothing like the cannabis oil I use but I only use a dropper full at a time so the coconut oil might be better since you could put a lot more in your mouth. I will probably try it next time myself. I have both virgin coconut oil (tastes like coconut) and refined (doesn't smell or taste like coconut) they will melt to clear liquid just slightly above room temp and definitely at body temp or in you mouth. Probably melt it first but to not make it warm or hot at all. Otherwise buy the liquid which supposedly processed a lot more. I used salt water in high school after I pieced my tongue (on purpose). I kind of forgot about that and will probably try that again but I remember that stinging and that was just basically a small puncture. It is good for disinfecting though and probably the best/safest way to do that if needed. I remember it making the would kind  of raw so it could slow down healing  if you do it too much like washing a scraped knee too often and it can't dry and heal. Like just Joe said it does just take time. I've also found not talking helps since I tend to continue to bite and scratch up my tongue when I do since it is so swollen and scraped up already. When you think about it I've actually been sort or impressed? at the tongue's ability to heal. I have joke that they should stop doing research on stem cells and start working on tongue cells. I've bitten my tongue up pretty badly (nothing like just Joe) including biting off pieces on both sides and not only have I been surprised at how fast it heals but also how fast the pieces I've bitten off seem to grow back. It can still take a good amount of time depending how bad but think how long it would take other body tissue like skin, muscle, or bone to heal if you did that same amount of damage to it. Good luck and let me know if you find something that works.
