Abnormal EEG for 2.5 year old son - Help please

Tue, 08/16/2016 - 09:21
My son, who is nearly 3, has complained of headaches off and on for several months. Every time it was when we were riding in the car, so we attributed it to motion sickness. About a month or so ago, he complained of a headache while we were sitting on the couch and then threw up, which really freaked me out because Google was saying brain tumor. We took him to the pediatrician who said it was just a virus. However, we ended up taking him back a couple of weeks later because he was complaining of headaches nearly every day at home. We went to a neurologist who suggested possible seizures, and we have epilepsy in both of our families (my husband's dad has/had it and my brother had juvenile epilepsy). He got an EEG that day, and an MRI last Saturday. MRI came back clean, which was a huge relief, but the nurse said on the phone that the EEG showed abnormalities, and that they wanted to do a video EEG for 3 days in the hospital. I have looked up all the kinds of seizures, and he does not have any typical symptoms of seizures, even the absence ones. Lately, he has been saying he's tired a lot. Sometimes he will say his stomach hurts. We have not been able to get any more info from the neurologist yet, which I'm frustrated about. During the EEG, he cried for about half of it because he wanted to get up. He stayed still for most of it, but we ended up giving him a lollipop during it to calm him down. Would crying or eating a lollipop show "abnormal" activity. The person who was administering the EEG said it was ok. Does anyone have any insight on this? Thanks in advance.

The 2 main tests for epilepsy

Submitted by just_joe on Tue, 2016-08-16 - 11:24
The 2 main tests for epilepsy are the EEG and an MRI. One shows the brain as it is. The EEG shows the electrical output coming from the brain. It the EEG was normal fine many are. But if it came up with abnormalities they are seeing spikes or waves, ie seizure activity. What starts a seizure is an electrical impulse hitting wrong in the brain.Abnormalities are elecrtical impulses hitting wrong. The 3 day EEG will collect more information on where they are along with other information. Those are done in a hospital unless it is an ambulatory EEG. By getting the information the neurologists will kow where in the brain they are coming from and that will help them determine which type of epilepsy he has and the different types of seizures he may have.Amy Jo commented on this and yess she advised researching. this site has all kinds of information in it that you can findI hope this helps.Joe
