uneducated medical personel

my husband has decided that a lot of my confusion over epilespy is brought on by the stupid uneducated medical personel. like he said the emt that said i couldnt have had a seizure if i didnt fall over and start jerking. then ther was the nurse in the triage that almost called security to throw my son out cause he was answering questions for me, when i was out in la la land. luckily another nurse was there who was there had epilepsy and took me back to a room and got me in a bed before i had a t/c. also er doctors that have no clue how to treat t/cs. went to adiffent hospital this time and they shot me with ativan, which kept them at bay for a few days. the other hospital never did anything. then don remembered we went ther berfor after multi seizures and i got some new improved dilantiv stuff to stop them. plus of course not getting all the info i need from my doc for my condition doesnt help. banffgirl

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having issues with medical personnel not taking care of your situation. My first thought would be, if there is someone unable to take care of you or you think they are having difficulty doing their job, discuss it with the hospital administrator and ask questions as to why they are not performing their job. I'm unsure what location you're in US or Canada so I can only speak on our behalf here in the states particularly of the Midwest. In my situation, I've never had any issue at our emergency rooms nor in our university hospital as they have been very quick to get information and get the patient into see a doctor. Since I've been in Iowa, I've only had to see a doctor in the emergency room two or three times and each time were during hours of high peak time. The ER doctor was very helpful, very professional, and the RNs were quite kind. When you say, "not getting all the info i need from my doc for my condition doesn't help." What are you referring to? Are you expecting your neurologist to send your details into the ER right then and there? Again, I don't know your area but from what I've always been told from attending physcians in the emergency room, they do not need to see your records of the primary doctor to know your medical history however you are expected to follow up with your primary care doctor after you leave the emergency room because the attending doctor is NOT your doctor. They are only there to take care of immediate cases, not ongoing. Does that make sense? Case scenario, when I injured my back the attending physician who had taken care of me at 2:30 in the morning in the emergency room gave me paper work to give to my primary care physician the next time I see him. When I saw my PCP that following week, he had a copy but I gave him what I had plus he'd gotten to see x-rays that were taken that night/morning and we went from there. Long and the short of it, your primary care doctor, at least here in the states, is the person who is involved in your care not the ER doctor. Sorry so long but I've been through it between myself and my husband when I had to take him in for his high levels of blood sugar. I hope you get things figured out and I would surely stay on top of issues. If you feel that a medical personnel has mistreated you, it would be helpful to check if there is a customer care department within the hospital or speak with the hospital administrator. It does pay to be kind on these natures and focus how they can improve for the patient rather than look at the issues negative. :) Best of luck to you! Sue

Besides the expensive, unecessary ride to the hospital also, I have had the same experiences. I either come out of it in the ambulance with the flashing lights and loud siren on, which are great for an epileptic by the way, or by the time the bright lights in the ER are shining in my eyes. Shortly afterwards, they tell me something I would never have had a clue of figuring out, I just had a seizure!!! 10 minutes later, they are sticking a clip-board with forms and a pen under my nose telling me I have to sign before I can be released. A few days later, the ambulance ride and hospital bills show up usually totaling anywhere from $3000 to $5000 dollars. Nothing in the ambulance or ER was done to me to stop my seizure, but for whatever reason, I had to be transported by ambulance to the hospital so they could tell me I just had a seizure.
