Some General Infomation

Hi everyone.

I hope its okay to post here. I’ve been attempting to research epilepsy for a number of months now, and found this site via Google. I understand this site is mostly support-basis, and I hope I don’t offend anyone by posting.

I’m writing a YA (Young Adult) Paranormal/Fantasy novel series set in modern times USA. My protagonist has epilepsy, which plays into the plot of the overall story, and so I am looking for a little help narrowing down which types she has. I’ve done some research already, but I’m still a little confused in some areas. A friend advised me to ask ‘people in the know’. I debated on whether to post as, as I said, I don’t wish to offend anyone, but here I am. I wish to learn, and would like to portray the facts correctly.

With various kinds of epilepsy, I understand that the condition is subjective in that symptoms can present themselves differently in each person; giving a different experience. I thought I’d post below my protagonists symptoms and was wondering if anyone can put a name to them (because here is where I’m confused…), so I can then do some more research in those areas. As I said above, I am trying to write the character as realistically as possible.

I’m not 100% sure that all these symptoms “fit” together as one kind of seizure which is also why I’m posting... but it’s what I’d like to go with in my story.

First Kind: the most common kinds of episodes.
1) The main type I’m having trouble narrowing down. First she would get an “aura”—tingling/numbing in the left hand—and then her body would begin to shake and convulse. She would have a perhaps minute or so to sit herself down before she wouldn’t be able to control her muscles any longer. She might be able to prop herself up, or she might fall on her side/back. She would be conscious throughout the entire episode and fully aware of what was going on around her (possibly be able to get a few words out in response, or not, depending what ties up?). I’d wanted her to only have the clonic stage and not the tonic.

I assume this is a ‘clonic’ seizure, but the part about her being awake during the episode is confusing me as far as the facts vs what I’ve read from personal accounts.

Second Kind: the less common episodes.
2) The more severe of the two. Again, she would get the “aura”—a metallic taste in her mouth—she would then begin to shake and convulse (again, I wanted to go with just the clonic) and soon enough she’d blackout. It could take anything between 30 seconds to a couple minutes for her to blackout—is this possible? Is there generally a maximum time before a person black’s out?

I assume this one is a standard clonic seizure?

Recovery:
The first kind wouldn’t take as long as the second kind. Headaches for both kinds, and nausea? But on the second kind she’d want to sleep for a few hours—possibly sleep after both kinds, but longer for the second kind?

Thank you very much for taking the time to read. Once again, I hope I haven’t offended anyone by posting here. Please feel free to respond if you wish. Any info would be awesome.

Just to add, I have now begun to research the emotional aspect of the condition, so if anyone would like to share their own personal accounts of the above symptoms, please feel free. If not, I totally understand.

My aim for this part of my story is to do the character and the condition justice.
Kind regards.

I don't personally relate to

I don't personally relate to very much of that myself but no two people will have the exact same symptoms or react the same to an episode. At least in my experience. Not everybody gets an aura before a seizure, I never did until I had my VNS implant ( Vegas Nerve Stimulator ). When I have a Grand Mal I do not know anything until I am coming out of it crying because I am in pain and for some reason that is just always been my body's response. There are times where I will only let or want a certain person to touch me or I will get angry if they try and get me to the couch or the bed because I just want to lay on the floor to sleep. I will loose time... not know what day or month or sometimes even my kids names in the very beginning. I'm going thru a Shitty time with my epilepsy because I'm going into status epileptic a lot and having new reactions to my normal meds. But before my disorder progressed I had generalized medication resistant epilepsy. My brain misfires all over, not on my just right or left.
