Seizures upon Waking Up! (2) and General Myoclonic Seizures

Sun, 01/11/2015 - 04:28

Hello everyone,

Let me just start by saying that I made this post because something needs to change in my life in order to make me feel safe/normal. I must do something!

Anyways, EVERY SINGLE DAY I get these little myoclonic seizures. Completely unstoppable, I feel an electric shock in my brain. They only last a few seconds (generally somewhere between 5-10) and I DON'T lose consciousness, but they are the worst periods of my life. They make me wonder if I am too abnormal for this world to successfully live on, whether or not I will fall or be OK, if I did something wrong earlier on to provoke the seizure or if I could have done something that I didn't to prevent it. Most importantly, I ponder about what my future holds in place for me (both over the long term or, even worse, maybe that they'll come in clusters over the next few minutes). The horror is really indescribable...

Mostly, it's in the mornings that they affect me. I tend to wake up from my dreams with these seizures, and often I will go back to sleep and wake up again, seizure-struck, in a painfully recurring loop (sometimes 7 or 8 times). They continue to affect me as I take my shower, brush my teeth, etc. . Now, again, mornings are when they are the worst, but there is nothing to prevent them from occuring later on throughout the day either. There's always the good days and the bad days. Often they involve muscle jerks and I'll stop in some funky position for a brief moment, every now and then lightly wetting myself. Shaking in the body/limbs/fingers is a common resulting effect. One common psychological factor is that they seem to happen when a random thought throws me off-guard. This is difficult to explain, but it might be a link. Whether they are completely random or not is still a mystery to me.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I currently take Keppra and Vimpat, which have THANKFULLY seemed to resolve my grand-mals, but I am still left with these myoclonic ones. I often will take a benzo (usually Klonopin) to help settle things, but it's not always effective.

Any thoughts or guidance is MUCH appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Welcome Lawerence Well I would say you have some issues to deal with. From what I have read in your post you think you are not normal. You want change in your life so you can be safe.. Without posting your age or how long you have been living with epilepsy it is hard to post some things I would post. Without knowing how long you have been dealing with this issue or how long it has been since yo utalked to your doctor it is also diffacult. Without knowing when your last medications change was then I can't tell you some things. There are issues that need to be checked yearly. Medications and dosages are primary issues if a person is still having seizures of any kind. Did the keppra reduce the number od seizures you were having other than the grand mal seizures? If they did then discuss this issue with your neurologist so adjustments can be made to your dosages. Too much medication is just as bad as not enough medication. Been there done that...  Without knowing your age and if your body has changed much in the last year or so it is hard to determine if your dosages need to be looked at since medications are generally set with a persons weight to start with. I had to have my dosages changed when I was growing and changing from a kid to a teen. They were changed 4-5 times in less than a year. Growing from a 85# 4'8" kid to a 135# 5'6" teen did have issues. Oh and hormonial changes do effect medications too. They make me wonder if I am too abnormal for this world to successfully live on  I hope this helps and you get the assistance you need

hi lawrence the whole idear of aed drugs is based upon one having to much activity in the brain .the trouble is  not many peolpe do.  if you say you stopped the aed and the seizures stopped would you not draw from that experience that the drugs were causing your seizures .i gave up my aed and my seizures stopped . now i,v found out i was having sleep deprived seizures . all the aed were doing was messing with my sleep and making me feel like shit.
