Hey Everyone, I don't know what to do. I'm practically in tears right now. My boss is considering terminating my position becuase of my problems with communication as a result of my E. He likes the work I do but gets very frustrated when I can't communicate properly. He's not trying to be a jerk. He knows I have E and has no problem with it. To be fair I didn't tell him that the communication problems are stemming from my E. and now the stress is making it worse. I'm scared if I do tell him it would seal my fate so to speak (ha ha). Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? Has anyone been able to get past the speech problems? I love my job and don't want to loose it : ( biogal

Hi Biogal, I Experienced the same problem as U when I was working for a Big Company. When I was put back on Dilantin I ended up with really bad slurred Speech and had alot of short Memory Loss which effected my job as well. Now, This is not an Answer for everyone, and it has been very hard for me to finally accept, because I do stil miss my Job and loved it so much. I have Grand-mals and had to change my Dilantin to Trileptal which did help the Side Effects very Considerably. And me and my Neuro decided it was best for my to Stop Working and I Applied for Disability and applied for Unemployment because they let me go because of other problems with my Meds and all and to Dangerous for me to be working around Chemicles and all. I was Denied for Disability but do have an Attorney. I did at first take Short Term Leave and was covered for 6 mnths and got pay but when My Neuro said he was not releasig me anytime soon they let me go that is why I was eligble for unemloyment because I was there for 2 yrs. Just letting U know what happened to me. See about Changing Meds that might help alot, it helped me. Like I said, all the things I did is not for everyone. I know it is too Dangerous for me to be working anywhere because now I get no Warning Signs I just spin around twice which People think Iam fooling around and no one trys to catch me and I hit the Concrete floor, mine happen very fast, and Iam not driving that much. I have to get to my Drs Appoinment which I have to Drive Myself. When I get Disability, I will be checking into help with Transportation like a busing system, because I could kill myself or others if i was driving. I hope I have helped u in anyway. Hi, I've been where you are - sort of. For me, it wasn't communication issues, but E & seizures basically have pretty much ended my career in one field & left me looking for a career in a new field, some how. On a very minor level I relate to you, so I'll explain my circumstances & maybe you'll get something out of this to help save at least A JOB that you like for you. Basically I've worked in Information Technology doing all different things for nearly 10 years. Early 2005 I started working for the place I used to work for as a Consultant (Business Analyst). I was honest from interview # 1 on - said I had E, said I didn't know if I'd ever get a license -- too risky!! Travel was a huge part of the job, but for some reason they thought they'd make it all work, I'd do internal & local stuff, still hit quotas no problem! Things changed & changed fast! I wasn't given any 'billable' projects really -- everything required travel & the image of the consultant taking a bus instead of driving didn't work. Just over a year later in Feb. 2006 it was one of 2 things. A) Try marketing & sales (desk job - B2B telemarketing) B) Unemployment. Well, even though I figured I'd hate it, I took A) - desk job, internal, marketing. I was right, I hated it. Different manager, not what I like to do at all. Stuck it out. I should have started looking for a new job when I realized I hated it, but I just toughed it out. Back in December 2006 we mutually decided that it was the wrong move for me to end up in marketing, and there were no more options, so now I'm trying to find the right job toughing out life on unemployment. My advise - you find the 'transfer job'. Figure out how else your skills & knowledge could be applied in the company. Even if it means a slight demotion say - isn't person "X" really busy, and they need an assistant, if that's something you'd enjoy! Find your own option "A" to present to them as a temporary fix until you're back up to yourself & ready to take on your job again. You could always multi-task & do parts of your current job to help out a temp replacement, but down grade a little & do something else for the company depending on what field you in. That's basically what they did to me, even though they told me it was a new "great opportunity"...they took away what I loved to do, and down graded things. Even people in interviews ask why I ended up demoted. So, now I gotta apply for a lower salary type job to make it look like I'm trying to go from entry back to where I was again! FRUSTRATING..... Hope you get something out of this to help keep if not your current job at least a job within the company you work for & eventually hopefully your job back! Good Luck!

Hey Godiva Girl! I work in IT as well. I recommend working for a university. Universities often have their own police and EMT responders, which is great, because you can make the EMTs aware of you and your E and what to do in case of emergency, and don't necessarily have to tell the boss about your E. Universities also usually have a shuttle or bus system, which makes it a lot easier to get around. Many students don't have cars. Universities also often have a disability support services office. Some universities also offer continuing education courses right on campus. Mine had a special course in learning to live with chronic diseases. Yeah. You should definantly try to work for a university. They employ a lot of IT people. Good Luck!
