The Phenytoin to Keppra switch

Mon, 02/19/2007 - 00:10
Hi all! Let me start out by saying it's a pleasure to be a member of this community and wish you all health and happiness. Let me start out with a little bit of my history and move onto my question. I only have a history of tonic-clonic seizures (grand-mal) while entering/awaking from sleep. They began when I was 8 years old and lasted until I was 10 and they were frequent. My parents put me on Tegretol at the time, later switched to Dilantin as I entered puberty and adolescence. At 18, I felt I didn't need the medication anymore so began weigning myself off too quickly and BAM! I had 2-3 seizures (once while taking a nap one day and the other sleeping one night--i woke up with a dislocated shoulder the next morning). So I began taking dilantin again. At 24, I graduated college and moved to Florida. Once again, without the doctor's permission, I weigned myself off it again...only this time very gradually and safely. I experienced no seizures and felt really good. About 8 months after being dilantin free, with a combination of stress, I began to experience panic attacks and anxiety, but learned anxiety/depression runs in the other side of my family. At 25, I began taking dilantin again but saw a new neurologist who recommended I switch to just keppra. So I did, still no seizures. Right now I'm entirely off the dilantin and on the keppra (750mg 2x) but have been noticing mood swings and depression. I have a history of depression as well. So I guess the first question is: 1.Should my doctor have prescribed me with keppra being I have tonic-clonic seizures while sleeping only? I know I explained this to her. My EEG and MRI came back normal. 2. Is this depression thing something others have experienced? will it go away or is that hard to say (caused by other factors)?. Any help/advice would be appreciated...if you need me to elaborate more let me know. THanks, Barry

I have been on keppra since I

I have been on keppra since I was 15, I find it works quite well when taken the right way, as to the depression and anxiety, I have those as well. Although the anxiety and depression run heavily on my Dad's side, i was told mine was different. The keppra does cause some depression and anxiety, so does the chemical imbalance that causes the seizures. My neurologist had put me on 50mg of Nortryptaline once a day, right before bed. Though it helped tremendously at first, (including stopping my migraines), after 2 years or so, and adjusting doses, i feel like it no longer is working. I plan to talk to my Neurologist Friday to discuss further options to help treat the depression and anxiety.
