not sure about diagnosis

Sun, 07/16/2006 - 13:47
I ahve just been diagnosed 5 weeks ago, was told I have petite mal seizures, I assume from doing research that I am experiencing simple partial seizures, I am totally aware of my surroundings, things look different almost unexplainable, I do smell things burning from time to time and and I feel scared cause I don't know what is happening. I am having feelings of doubt that maybe there is something else and maybe misdiagnose because this does not sound like a typical seizue even though I am aware that they can happen in a variety of ways. I would like to know if anyone else has had the same experiences, should I seek a second opinion.

Sheila- This sounds like a very typical simple partial seizure. burning smell, "funny" change in vision, feeling of fear. Ever feel like you've been drinking but you haven't? Classic simple partial seizure. I've had thousands of these seizures and tho they can manifest in different ways, they usually happen in a pretty 'typical' way for each person. Make note in a journal of when and how they happen (how you feel) and you should notice some pretty distinct patterns. stef

I have had Petit Mal all my life (40 years) or also Absence Seizures. As a child it was a vacant stare no-one there, with eyes or eyelids flickering, did not know these were occurrng. One big trigger factor was tiredness. Caused all sorts of learning problems through school. As I got to an adult still have the same symptoms but now I am totally aware while doing it and can stop the episodes if I wish to or can be bothered. I can usually be in a conversation with someone have the 3-4 sec absence then when finished continue on exactly where I left off with the sentence. I've had this condition for so long I've learnt to control it myself but I haven't had any of the other symptoms that you mentioned. These petit mal seizures or absence seizures can be hundreds a day - really plays havoc on your memory if you don't get help. Good luck
