Modified Atkins: What to change after a seizure?

Tue, 02/16/2016 - 18:29
Hello, I'm writing this on behalf of a friend who's been on the MAD for a couple months. (I'm also on it but this question is for her) She's been doing great on the diet but recently had a breakthrough tonic-clonic. There was no obvious seizure trigger. She's wondering what adjustments to the diet should she make. For example, should she increase her fat intake? Or decrease protein? Right now she aims for 65% fat, 30% protein, 5% carbs. What are the typical next steps after having a seizure on the diet? She was averaging a few seizures monthly and then gained control after starting the diet This was a surprise breakthrough and she wants to make some adjustment. Thanks!!

The person to ask is the neurologist. Also understand that if she has lost weight that loss may have changes the therapeutic levels enough to cause a breakthrough seizure. Meds are affected with changes in the body. Be it a gain or loss of weight or a hormonal change. A dosage change may be all that is needed or a change in the diet, It would be the neurologist that knows what is changed and by how much since the MAD is for seizure control. Doc asked me about it but then he knows the food I cook and eat. I wouldn't have been able to stay strictly on the diet and the newer meds were getting more control of my seizures.
