Memory/Dream Flashes and Tics

Wed, 12/24/2014 - 14:54

Hello,

I was diagnosed several years ago with Partial Complex Seizure. I get a lot of symptoms, most of which are very well controlled with medication. Many of them are related to a dream state, deja vu. They are usually well controlled, but in the past year I've gotten new symptoms (my eyes freezing and tic in my left hand, and what I'm calling memory flashes). I'm just wondering if anyone else has ever experienced the following:

1. sudden flashes of something familiar-feeling, almost as if I am just starting to remember something like a dream or a memory. It's incredibly brief, lasting for 1 second or less. I notice it often happens when I am re-directing my attention from one thing to another (such as turning to grab my coffee mug, or looking up from my keyboard). Sometimes for no reason as well. During an actual full seizure I get a similar feeling but drawn out for much longer. During that full seizure, I feel like all the dreams I've had recently are flooding through my head, or I have this strong and sustained feeling like I'm about to remember something really important or about to figure out the solution to a really big issue.

2. In the last year I've noticed a tic in my left hand, accompanied by my gaze "freezing" for a second. First, my gaze freezes, almost like I can't move my eyes, and then I get one tic in my left hand and then everything goes back to normal.

I know these are pretty specific, just wondering if anyone else out there can relate to any of it? If so, is there anything in particular that causes it for you?

Thanks!

Al

I can relate 100% to the whole memory or dream flashbacks. I chase temporal lobe epilepsy (left sided) cause me to have auras (deja vu based), complex partial seizures, and tonic Clonic seizures. My neurologist calls these memory and dream flash backs a "forced memory". He's explained it all to me to where I feel comfortable that it is directly related to my epilepsy and nothing else. If I were you, I'd ask your neurologist about it. And if you don't already have one, I'd make sure your neurologist is also an epileptologist. Kristy

I get these types of flashbacks on a daily basis happening multiple times a day. 99% of the time they are from the dreams I had the night before but occasionally they are from dreams I’ve had in years past. I have never been diagnosed with any form of epilepsy.
