Low Sodium problems

Mon, 10/01/2007 - 12:36
Hi, Since I started on Carbatrol over 5 years ago, I have always had a problem with low sodium. My sodium levels on the CBPs average between 122-130 which is well below the 135 minimum. However, it is just in the past year that sodium depletion has dropped further to the point that I am constantly adding salt to most of my meals and watching my fluid intake. My question to you is what do you do to maintain your sodium levels? And what do you do when you feel your sodium levels dropping. I am looking for new and better techniques. By the way, my doctor knows this but he and I agree that the seizure control is worth the sodium depletion. Any insight would be great.... Michelle

I've been on Carbamazapene.  It does the same thing.  I'm seeing the neurologist tomorrow to get a new medication. My low sodium is not suspected to be triggering Atrial Fibrillation..

By the way I've been taking

By the way I've been taking Salt supplements which helped to put me into a low normal place.  I don't like having to do that because it gives my kidneys a lot of extra work and the AFIB comes back once a month putting me in the urgent care.  I've had enough of that but I'm curious what medication is best to not have a bad effect on my sodium.
