Is it possible to be conscious during a seizure?

Wed, 06/24/2015 - 07:30

I have been experiencing nocturnal seizures for more than 2 years, largely controlled with Tegretol during the past 8 months. My sleep physician has labelled it Frontal Lobe Nocturnal Epilepsy.

However rather than lose consciousness, each seizure abruptly wakes me from sleep and I am fully conscious of the seizure as it happens - limbs shaking, inabilty to control the shaking, sensation of falling, etc. So there is no incontinence, no biting of the tongue, no confusion when the siezure has ended.

Has anybody else heard of, or experienced similar seizures where consciousness is gained rather than lost?

I don't know much about nocturnal epilepsy. But yes a person can be concious while having a seizure and know what is going on arround them. I had been written up for day dreaming in class when in reality those day dreams were focal seizures. The teacher would ask me a question and I wouls answer it but the words wouldn't come out until the seizure was over. which meant the amswer didn't come out until the teacher had gone to the nezxt student.I have also had focal seizures that generalized (covered the entire brain and went into a convulsion). In those I say the people arround me, knew what they said and understood what was said. I heard the person telling someone to get the nruse. I heard a friend say :Ewww I don't want to be arround him anymore" so yes a person can know whats going on while in a seizure.
