I am 39 and have been diagnosed with a seizure disorder.........

I am new to this website. I am very grateful that I found it. Reading everyone's questions, concerns and feelings has really helped me understand this disorder. I am still learning. I had my first seizure on January 16th, 2007 while I was driving my brand new car. I remember that my eye sight became blurry and had trouble focusing. The next thing I remember I was in an ambulance going to the hospital. I had a CT and everything came back normal. At that time the doctor did not feel I needed to start medication. The second seizure I had was on Feb. 21st, 2007 it was in the middle of Walmart. There was a employee near by and noticed I was falling and she helped me onto the ground. I was lucky because she was an EMT for 5 years. She said I lost consciousness, my body became stiff, eyes rolling, stared drooling and had problems breathing. They called the ambulance and took me to the hospital. This time the doctor started medication. He stared me on dilantin. I am on 350 mg. My side effects are forgetting what I am saying, where I placed items, find the right word and being very tired. I was wondering if these side effects ever subside? The doctor did a lot of blood work to rule out MS, stroke, blood clots, Dymling disease, etc. I had a 48 hour EEG and that came back normal. I also had a spinal tap and that too came back normal. I did have an MRI. They did find brain lesions all over my brain. It's not in one specific area so the doctor is unable to tell why they are there, the cause, or how long they were there. The doctor feels that maybe I am having these seizures because of my premature birth and illness after birth. My mom had me at 31 weeks. I only weighted 2 pounds and I was in the hospital for 90 days after birth. During that time I coded 6 times ( stop breathing ). I have never had any other problems because of being born early except...learning problems. I grew up, graduated from HS and went to college with out any problems. The doctor said they may never know the reason I have had two seizures....???? Has anyone else here experienced the same thing? Any information would be great. If this thread sounds confusing or my spelling skills are not the greatest....I am sorry....side effects of the Medication or seizure? Thank you for all of your help, ideas or suggesitons. Melissa

Welcome to the group, Melissa. I'm so sorry to hear of your problems. There's a very good chance that your body will become adjusted to the Dilantin. Many of us have had to deal with trying new medications and dealing with side effects, especially when first starting on the meds. I was put on Dilantin over 10 years ago and it controlled my seizures for a long time. I wish you good luck. - Josie

Melissa , Oh Melissa try living with them since you were a small 19 month old baby. When I turned 3 they quit. I had no problems in school except I had speech therapy for 3 yrs. They returned when I hit the puberty age of 11. They have been back ever since. I was active in volleyball, and basketball until I had a grand-mal seizure coming off the court. Once I hit HS I they didn't stop, I had one in PE class as a freshmen, and one last year as a Jr in English class. I have not had one since. My life is only messed up when I let it be and that is not very often. I don't let my Epilepsy run my life. I do have one big burden over my head though, DRIVING with Epilepsy. My license is revoked for 3 months and I use more caution then most of my friends do. Living with it can be difficult but don't let it ruin your life. BE A POSITIVE INFLUENCE for yourself, family, and friends. I have hid it well, most of my friends from other towns in Utah don't even know I have epilepsy because I don't share any information unless they ask. Dating has been a mess in some ways. It will be easier if you tell him/her that you have epilepsy and how to help you if you have one while you are with him/her. So two seizures is nothing considering I would turn bright blue as a baby, Grand-mal side effects (never swallowed tongue, or drooled) and also complex -partial (my whole right side of my body goes completely NUMB). So life has thrown some “curve balls” and “roller coasters” at me but I just stuck them out and learned that anyone, and almost everyone has a “trial” to deal with sometime in life whether it begins at birth or later on in life!!! "Normal is just a setting on the washing machine, and that have Epilepsy are far from normal!!!!!" (; Autumn ;)
