Grand mal seizure?

Sat, 01/17/2015 - 01:50

Hi,

One morning I woke up having a grand mal seizure, however I felt somewhat conscious while it was happening. I could hear my boyfriend talking to me and trying to help. I felt like I was throwing up and choking. I just wanted it to be over, to have control of my body again. I have to admit I was pretty terrified. When that one was over, it took a while for me to move and talk. I was just exhausted. Then maybe an hour or so later I had another seizure exactly like the first one. I've had grand mal seizures before, but for all of them I was completely unconscious. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar seizure, and if that would be classified as a grand mal seizure?

WelcomeI had a lot of seizures like the one you posted. I do not know what type they would be listed as today. When I was diagnosed back in the 1960's they were focal motor seizures. The seizures start in one area of hte brain. If it stays in that area they are simpae partials and affect that area only, However they can generalize which means they cover the entire brain. If that happens then the seizure will look like a grand gal and be just as stressful and strong. During mine I could see, hear and understand what was going on arround me. I saw the people arround me. I knew what was said. I know who was helping me and who backed away. I knew who called for the nurse (if it happened at school whioch is where nost of mine happened). So no you are not alone. They drain your energy just like a grand mal seizure does. When you have another shortly after the first one your need to get with your neurologist and discuss this with him/her. Back to back seizures can go into status epilepticus which is not a good thing. Today they have recovery medications which can help you. A recovery medication can keep you from going into the second seizure which means you might not go into status. With me my seizures started with a wierd feeling in my hand.It felt wierd  a tingling feeling and I couldn't move it. If it started to rise up I couldn't stop it. Once shoulder high I went down and was in the convulsive seizure. So I knew when I was going to go into one. Today they may be classified as generalized tonic clonic but then I am no doctor. Do contact your neurologist and talk to him about the classification and a recovery medication. I hope this helps Joe
