Epilepsy & Hair Loss

Fri, 04/21/2017 - 09:01
I am 21 year old (College student) with epilepsy since I was in 2nd grade. I've had hair loss for years now since my late middle school time. So it's been about 6~7 years since the hair loss started. At first, I didn't know what was the cause of it but I did nothing about it for years. When I showered, I would see hundreds of hair fall out. Nowadays, I changed the shampoo so I lose much less (about 100). I can see my scalp now a bit but not too bad for now. but I can also tell I lost a lot everywhere else in between, not just the scalp including getting an M shape forehead a bit. I noticed recently because I never put my hair up to show my forehead or cut my hair short not until I thought about trying it. I've been taking Zonisamide, valproate & lamotrigine for years now and increase the dose as I got older. Currently taking 450mg of Valproate & 125mg of Lamtrigine & 100mg of Zonisamide. I noticed a lot of people saying lamotrigine is giving them hair loss few months after they started & website says valproate gives hair loss (Lamotrgine was not mentioned for hair loss as one of the effects) I may do a surgery if possible to stop the seizures & taking the medications so I am currently in hospital for few days now testing where in the brain is causing it by watching me do seizures. I told the nurse today about the hair loss which I should have years ago when I visited the doctor but I did not know it was the side effect. The nurse said she'd change the medication after I'm out of the hospital for testing (whether I can do brain surgery or not) Website says that hair can grow back if the hair loss reason about because of medication/drug and is stopped. However I've been having hair loss for years due to medication & not few months like other who wrote posts. So I was wondering if it's still possible for my hair to grow back to normal or close to....

Hi,I am currently 27 and have been on medications since the age of 14. Began losing my hair at around 20 and did not take it seriously enough in the beginning. I now have crown baldness, the reason for which I'll never know- might be medications, stress, shampoo, quality of water or hereditary. I'm a little over 2 years seizure free since having underwent surgery. Being free of seizures makes the issue of hair fall/baldness miniscule.A year or two before the surgery, I did go to a hair clinic to check out the options to regrow my hair due to the baldness. Now I no longer want to mess with my skull/scalp with any cosmetic procedures with concern that it might cause complications to the operated area. I work in the biotech sector, where hair or looks are not important at all. I keep my hair short and be thankful for the new life.
