Epilepsy and claiming disability

Wed, 02/28/2007 - 09:21
I am wondering at what point you can claim disability and receive SSI. I cannot drive and have many petit mal "blank out" seizures a day. I have learned to get around it and I function perfectly. But I was just informed that I am losing consciousness technically, and had to quit my job since I can't make it out there anymore. I am just wondering what the guidelines are for disability. I live in Michigan if that is necessary.

I have never heard over there being a certain time guidline that you have to go by as far as when you can receive ssi. I have been on it now for 6years. The best advice I can give you is to do two things. The first being talk with your neurologist as far as does he/she think you would qualify. And than contact the Social Security office to get your paper work and get started. Sounds like you are a perfect reciepiant for SSI. I say go for it. If I can answer any questions for you and you would like to email me. Please do. Good Luck!!

My Neuro just put me on Disability. I never knew that I was eligible for Disability with E, but he asked me if I was on it, and started filling out the paperwork. I have not been able to work a regular job in years because of my E. I live in Pennsylvania for the time being, but want to move back out west where the sun shines every day.

i have been rejected from disability twice so far and am appealing for the second time. i am only asking for medical insurance so i can feel safe outside. though i would still be scared atleast my family will not have to pay for my EMT/ER bills. they dont seem to believe me and i will now be talking to a lawyer.
