Endurance Athletics and Epilepsy

Sat, 08/16/2014 - 00:30

Hi my name is Brad,

This is my first posting  on this site.  I was first semi diagnosised with a seziure condition 4 years ago.   I was training for a multi sport event (running, canoeing and mountain biking in a 1o hour relay). I left the office early not feeling well and I don't remember much of the trip home until I had a set of hand cuffs placed one me,  Long story short I spent the night in hospital and saw my neurologist not long after.  I had a neurologist as I have MS.  He suggested I might have had a seziure, but since it went unseen...

Six month later after skiing 12 of 13 days I woke in the couch having fallen asleep watching an olympic hockey game.  This didn't suprise me when I sat up the condition of the room did. I ended up back at the hospital again.  I say my neurologist again a few days later. He told me I likely had a seziure condition and I should give up rock climbing.  That was more an inside joke with the two of is dating back almost a decade when he gave me the MS diagnosis.

He suggested to  that I needed to be  careful about endurance athletics as he finds it challenging finding the right meds for marathoners with my health problems.  I'm on very mild dose of Keppra and things have been good. I'm doing that race that I was training for when in had the first likely grand mal in a month.  I would like to do a marathon, but...

Just wondering if a anyone out there is doing endurance events and how they are handling things. I known things very greatly case to case but...

Thanks,

Brad
