Hi It took me a while to

Hi It took me a while to think what EMU is or was. Everybody going to intials can mean nothing unless you have used them. When I first saw Emu I remembered a bird that doesn't fly. Or the Europian Monitary Union. It too a while to think of Epilepsy Moniter Unit. If it is what I think it is the Unit is there to run an EEG and other tests to find out more about your epilepsy. As for not functioning You will be watched and if anything happens you are going to be taken care of since most are in hospitals. As I stated the units are to fimd out more about where your epilepsy starts. I was in one and they had me stop taking my meds. No problem. They ran a MRI right before they set up the EEG which is run for the entire period of time you are there. I was in one for 3-4 days. No medications so they wanted to see where my seizures were comming from which they did. The MRI showed they what caused my epilepsy with the EEG they knew where in the brain the seizure activity came from. They linked the 2 tests together basically seeing where the activity was comming from they keyed in on that area on the MRI. Doc was trying to find out if I was a candidate for surgery. The scar tissue is on more then 1 lobe of my brain so I am not a candidate.  You are being watched constatnly and monitered the whole time.  In the unit I was in I could sleep in the bed. I watched videos (movies) news or what ever they had. People can come in and visit while you are in them. Once they have finished you are given medications again and you should have no problems. As for going without medications for a period of time your neurologist knows how long you can go without medications. If you start to go into status they have medications that can get you out quickly, As for status epilepticus I have been in it before and it isn't nice but I waas in it before 911 was aviable. Being in a hospital they can get you to the emergency room and stop it without any problems. But that does not happen very often.  I hope this helps and do hope you relax some since stress triggers seizures in many people. Joe
