Drinking with JME

Sun, 04/30/2017 - 21:44
Hey everyone! I'm 22 and was recently diagnosed wit JME after I had a seizure. I do not have arm jerks or other things having to do with JME, only seizures. When I had my seizure I was very sleep deprived, stressed, anxious, and had a bit to drink that day but was not drunk (about 2.5 glasses of wine). I'm in college and my doctor and parents said that I should not really be drinking because it may cause a seizure. But I'm always in the drinking atmosphere and will definitely be tempted by it. I was wondering if anyone has been drunk with JME without feeling the side effects of it, in my case, seizures. I'm not on any medication, because my diagnosis is fairly new. But if i get enough sleep and am not anxious or stressed but still drink do you thin I will still have a seizure? Let me know! Thanks for being a great community I can reach out to!

I do not have arm jerks or other things having to do with JME, only seizures. There are many different seizures which do you have?? Absence seizures look like the person is day dreaming/ A focal seizure can look like that to. They can have other issues that you might not think are seizures but they are. SO research the different types of seizures since a person can have more then one type of seizure.Generalized tonic-clonic seizures are reported in nearly all patients,, Probably the seizures you know are seizures. I had a grand mal seizure when I was about 13. I had been having petite mal (absence seizures) and focal seizures (partial seizures of all kinds) they can generalize and look like a tonic clonic)  So which seizures have you had since there are many different types that you know nothing about. As for drinking and having fun with your friends. I talked to my neurologist about it. Some said no alcohol. others said a drink now and then shouldn't hurt. But it is the amount of alcohol that you drink that you need to watch. By a drink Doc said a beer of glass of wine shouldn't be a problem but only the drink one and wait for an hour or two before drinking another. I had 1 drink which was generally a beer. The bartenders know I shouldn't drink alcohol so they gave me Shirley Temples. They look like everybody elses but have no alcohol in them. near beer tasted like beer. So go have fun but watch the amount of alcohol you drink.

It took me a few years to

It took me a few years to realize I couldn't drink with JME. Sleep and medication go hand in hand. I still go out although I don't drink I just have to watch for how much sleep I get.
