My 3 yr old started having drop attacks/seizures in May...

Thu, 12/09/2004 - 03:55

They increased rapidly to 10x per day when he started on a very low dose of epilim.  Once he started epilim, the seizures stopped for a few weeks and then he started having grand mal/tonic clonic seizures which were getting closer together - up to about weekly.  And now suddenly they have stopped completely - 5 weeks with no seizures of any kind so far.

For us the epilim has helped, but its hard to know if that is why they have stopped.  In July or so last year he had what was put down to being a febrile seizure although there was no indication of a fever prior to the seizure (and he didn't feel hot to touch until he had had the seizure).  After that he had what I now know were drop seizures (all I knew was that he kept falling suddenly and I was the only one who noticed it!) for several weeks and then they stopped abruptly.

I am wondering whether it is in some way seasonal (happened same time of year and stopped about the same time) - maybe allergy related, growth-spurt - something like that.  I don't think it is entirely the meds that have fixed it - unless it took 4 or 5 mths on the med for his system to work it out.

I think this is one of the hardest aspects of epilepsy - there really doesn't seem to be rhyme nor reason to it.

My 2 year old has started having drop seizures over the past couple of months.  Nothing has been effective so far.  The doctor is talking about doing the ketogenic diet but I have a lot of reservations.  How do you cope with allowing your child to act like a toddler, while trying to protect him from these drop attacks?
