ePILEPSY RUNS IN FAMILY

Mon, 01/31/2005 - 18:11
Hi, I am the mom of a 7 year old boy, who had his first seizure about 2 weeks ago. I had Epilepsy when I was young and it was about this age that I started. Not only that but my sister was having them too and no one knew at the time. It was only after I started having Grand mals that my mom noticed that my sister was having slight ones too. My Grandma started having seizures when she was going through menapause. I out grew my Epilepsy by the time I was in high school, but my sister still has them. I have my little boy an appointment with a Neurologist this week and so far there have been no more seizures. I just would like to have some opinoins about what some one else might think about this. It has been a long time since I have been through anything like this. My husband seems to think that this was a one time thing, but I still worry and I am having trouble sleeping even though I know what to do and how to do. Thanks, Daizygirl

Daizygirl,

Even though your son hasn't had any seizures, at least at the time of when you posted you message, I would recommend to keep the neuro appointment, explain what you witnessed when he had that seizure to the neuro and do whatever s/he suggests. Better safe than sorry.

Sorry about you and your relatives having a seizure history, but at least you know what it's like and what to do, because that is important.

Hi my name is Ken. When I was around 8 I Started having seizures from which my mom believed to be from a blow to the head while toboganing. After going to the doc I was given meds, this only made things worse so my mom had taken me off them and things got better. At age 18 my sz's started back up. My father wanted to blame it on everything but the fact I had inherited it through his family tree.Maybe his way of dealing with it .In my late 20's I learned that it had been  in my grandmothers family. It didn't effect my grandmother but did effect 2 out of her 9 children, but not my father.Out of our family of 4 it got me the hardest and my youngest brother in a very mild way.Now I have a girl 13 and aboy 12 and so far so good.My sister has 2 girls and 1 had problems a few years back but haven't heard any more, my oldest brother has 4 and no problems. I guess what I'm trying to say is that yes it does get pasted down through genes but it's ahit and miss thing.Sure hope your little guy grows out of it,but if not please give him all the emotional support you can!!!!
