Complex partials progress to secondarily generalized

Thu, 02/03/2005 - 09:58
Hi all... A brief background. My husband, Brian, developed epilepsy around the age of 21. Medication eliminated the grand mal seizures, but he continued to have complex partials (about 4 a month). In an attempt to get better control, we went to NIH, and they suggested a temporal lobectomy. We went with it, and his right temporal lobe was removed. The surgery was 3 years ago, and things were much improved for a while. But, in the last year, the complex partials have returned... In addition, since November he has progressed from a complex partial into a secondarily generalized seizure... this has happened twice. We are devastated that the surgery was not the answer... and even more upset that these secondary seizures are worse than what he experienced before the surgery. He has been on Trileptal since the surgery, and he is switching over to Tegretol now in hopes that we can control these secondaries. I don't know what I'm looking for exactly. I guess I'm wondering if these seizures are going to worse, progressing back to grand mal. I read somewhere that complex partials can turn into secondary generalized seizures, but I don't know if they can progress furhter. If anyone has experienced with this, I would really love to hear from you. I'm out of my territory.Stella

I have a question to ask people who have complex partial seizures.  A short while ago, I took a seizure and I did a horrible thing.  I grabbed my mother and threw her against a wall, with my forearm against her throat.  How the hell can anyone live everyday, knowing in the back of their mind that they can hurt their mother without even know it.  My god, I am alot bigger than my mother, and they say that when you take seizures like this that one is alot stronger than normal.  How can someone live with that
