Question about new possible seizure episode

Mon, 03/14/2011 - 22:03

Hello!  I was wondering if anyone in here has ever experienced a strange new “symptom” of a seizure.

My son, now 5 years old, has temporal and occipital lobe epilepsy.  It usually presents itself in over reactions with feelings, emotions, absence seizures, seeing things and hearing things that aren’t there.  However, I had a strange occurrence the other night and I am not sure what to make of it.  There are 2 instances I need to talk about.

First, about 3 weeks ago my son was coming down the steps and I heard him stop singing.  I turned in time to see him go into an absence seizure and then his body just gave out and he fell down the steps.  Being a mom, I chalked it off to he slipped.

But then 2 nights ago I was in the grocery store with my husband.  My son was sitting in one of those race car attachments at the front of the grocery cart.  We walked past the deli aisle and he asked for a piece of cheese.  I gave him a piece from the deli counter.  About 1 minute later he started mumbling incoherently, and just fell forward.  I tried to lift him up and he was dead weight.  I took of my sweatshirt and put it under his head, turning it to the side.  He was drooling a lot and his breathing slowed down like he was in a deep sleep.   My husband believed he was just tired from the day and we should let him sleep.  About 20 minutes later at the register he suddenly sat up, blinked twice and asked for another piece of cheese.  It was very strange and I am wondering if this is the result of a seizure.

Wow, sounds like a different type of seizure to me.  He could be experiencing atonic, or drop, seizures.  It causes muscles to give out, often affecting the muscles associated with standing; thus the name drop seizure.  Definitely get this checked out by your son's neuro.
