Jerks on awakening...

Sun, 10/16/2011 - 11:41
I know someone who sometimes has jerks on awakening. The jerks are invisible but she feels them only inside the arms/shoulders. Sometimes in the legs.

If the light from the sun are strong and it blows outside and the light is shining sharply on the tabel or a white piece of paper she can get this jerks.

She has had an EEG perform and it's normal. But she didn't sleep on the EEG, and I have read that the most safe way to the diagnosis of JME is a sleep deprivated EEG on awakening. Has she this type of epilepsy or can it be something else?

Sorry about my bad english!

Certainly possible--this is how it started for me and most usually before I have a big seizure, I will have jerks in the morning before it takes place--I feel really lucky for this as it serves as a warning for me to be safe, e.g. lay down, not go down stairs, etc.   So many with epilepsy aren't so lucky to have these warnings!

I have had plenty of normal EEGs, and had a normal sleep-deprived EEG as well, but I very much have JME even though only a quarter of the EEGs came out showing issues (usually after hyperventilation) over the past 20 years since diagnosis at age 19.  A large proportion of the seizures I have had in my life indeed have taken place when I didn't get enough sleep--your friend should be careful with that.  Hopefully something else is the root cause, but it is defitely worth a sleep-deprived EEG--and my suggestion--although they may say you can get 2-3 hours of sleep in the middle of the night--issues are more likely provoked with NO sleep...

 Best of luck!
