Making art about epilepsy

Sat, 02/26/2011 - 13:00

Hi everyone!

My name is Rita Marcalo and I've suffered from epilepsy since a young age (I'm now 38).

I am also an artist/choreographer/dancer, and I have been making work about my condition for a few years now.

In 2009 I staged 'Involuntary Dances' which was a 24 hour performance piece where I tried to induce an epileptic seizure. The work polarised public opinion in the sense that as many people thought it was an interesting piece of work as the ones who thought it was not.

I am currently touring the second work in this trilogy (She's Lost Control), with the first performance taking place in London this thursday 3rd March at RichMix (http://www.richmix.org.uk/aandc_sheslostcontrol.htm?month=2&year=2011). This work tries to give audience members an idea of what it feels like to experience an epileptic seizure, and therefore to educate people about the condition.

I hope to see some of you there and please pass the information on to anyone you think might like to see it. There are only 40 places available for performance so book early to avoid disappointment!
