Epilepsy and CoEnzyme Q10

Sat, 01/06/2007 - 16:15
Has anybody used coenzyme Q10 in their epilepsy treatment? Were there any good / bad results? Did the doctor have any comments as to why it could / could not be used in seizure management?

I have epilepsy, and have

Submitted by specializedtom on Mon, 2017-04-17 - 03:16
I have epilepsy, and have lived with it since childhood. Knowing what I know now about what caused my epilepsy, both my mum and I suspect it was caused by the MMR vaccine that was administered. After been confirmed with epilepsy, I was prescribed with a course of Dilantin. Soon afterwards, my mum noticed severe overgrowth in my gum-line. This was taken care of by my dentist, and I was instead put on a course of tegretol and epilim (which I am still on to this day). But that's not what I'm here to ask about on this forum. I have read up on various forums there are beneficial side effects taking CoQ10, including treating periodontal disease (see http://toothbody.com/amazing-coq10-repair-and-heal-periodontal-disease/ ) , Due to continued used of epilim, I now have problems with a receding gum-line as well as excessive bleeding. As I am now fast closing in on 50, anything that can improve my overall health without any adverse side effects, I am willing to look into. Has there been any study into the use of CoQ10 in combination with epileptic medications such as Tegretol and Epilim? Are there any side effects with CoQ10 that I should be made aware of before commencing?Any help regard this would be much appreciated. email: tom@thorp.com

For anyone who is unaware of

For anyone who is unaware of coenzyme Q10, here is a page of info: http://www.umm.edu/altmed/ConsSupplements/CoenzymeQ10cs.html It isn't used for seizure management as, to this date, it has not been found to have any effect in that area. "Most individuals obtain sufficient amounts of CoQ10 through a balanced diet, but supplementation may be useful for individuals with particular health conditions " http://www.umm.edu/altmed/ConsSupplements/CoenzymeQ10cs.html#Precautions "Dr Reed said it was difficult to say recommending herbal remedies was dangerous because there was not enough research into their effects. But she added: "The important point is that this has 'the potential' to be dangerous. We need far more research into these drugs." How they all measured up The preparations recommended by health shop staff (with the study authors' notes on their effectiveness) were: Vitamin B complex (evidence exists for its use in the treatment of depression); Chinese herbal tea mix (ingredients not divulged therefore reference to evidence base not possible); St John's Wort (evidence exists for its use in the treatment of depression); ginseng (mixed evidence for its use in depression); and Bio-Strath liquid tonic, Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan, cat's claw, Coenzyme Q10, Floradix liquid tonic, gingko biloba, guarana, multivitamins and royal jelly" (for all of which no evidence supports their use in treating depression)." http://www.epilepsy.com/newsfeed/pr_1160055027.html ~sol
