numbness

Thu, 12/23/2004 - 07:31

Since having seizures (complex partial), I have experienced facial numbness - like novicaine - and it is very irritating - it comes and goes - is this something others have experienced?

Is it something related to seizures or the meds?  (neurontin and topamax)

Thanks for any insight.  :)

Dear Higgins:

I am deeply sorry to hear about your husband.  These conditions are not just difficult for those who are afflicted, but it can be quite difficult on the loved ones who care for them too!  I have been on Neurontin for five years now, and this numbing sensation has just started within the last two weeks.  Although I do think that perhaps my medication amounts need to be increased.  Our bodies tend to become resistant to medications that are taken regularly.  The body develops sort of an immunity for familiarity with the medication and therefore it doesn't work as well.  Either a patient needs to have the dosage raised, or prescribed a new medication that has the same results in it's place.  Just  for an example, say if you take a muslce relaxant regularly for a back condition, eventually, the medication simply won't work anymore because our bodies now need a higher doseage in order to have the same effects it once did.  The same goes for taking penicilin.  We can only take it for so long before our bodies become immune.  Anyways, maybe that could be right.  Let me know what you eventually find out as I am curious.

About numbness on the face

I have had complex seizures for 14 years caused from a fall on my head, the numbness that sometimes I call liver face, was the first signal I was having a seizure, I hated it I thought it was where they cut my scalp to open my skull but it was not, it was just little seizures, I had it confermed many times by many doctors.  I had a depressed skull fracture with many types of hematomas I had fragments of my skull in my brain that they had to remove, so, its little wonder I get seizures.  Complex seizures are so weird to experience, its like I am in the twilight zone or a snow storm of many many thoughts that I can not put my finger on or hold on to, but its freighting to say the least.  I really hate it when people ask me questions while I am in a seizure it makes them worse for me I tell them but they keep doing it.   I take 2000 mgs of Depakote they work pretty good.  Shane
