Lamictal and birth control pills

Mon, 03/20/2006 - 22:38
I was just wondering if anyone was on brith control as well as Lamictal. My neurologist said that there is no interaction, but I came across 2 studies on the interaction that stated that it decreased Lamictal concentration by almost half. I'm not sure if I should be worried to start the birth control.

Hormonal birth control can affect level of lamictal in the bloodstream, requiring adjustments in doses in some people. If someone has been on birth control and lamictal, then birth control is stopped, also need to watch to make sure lamictal level doesn't increase too much. Here is a link to general info on lamictal and birth control and other possible drug interactions - www.epilepsy.com/medications/b_lamictal_interaction.html Hope this helps! Lamictal may cause severe or life-threatening skin rash, especially in children and in people who are allergic to other seizure medications. Serious skin rash may also be more likely to occur if you are taking Lamictal together with valproic acid (Depakene) or divalproex (Depakote). Seek emergency medical attention if you have a fever, sore throat, swollen glands, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash. addiction treatment

Please check with another neurologist. My daughter who had controlled seizures for 2 years with lamictal recently started taking the birth control pill - Yasmin. After 10 days on the pill she had a breakthrough seizure. She had not contacted her neurologist because she was assured by her gyno that Yasmin would have no interaction with her Lamictal. After her breakthrough seizure she immediately stopped the Yasmin. The blood level of the Lamictal had dropped to 4.3 and 2 weeks later it returned to her normal level of 9.1.
