Sibiling of a Person with Epilepsy

Friday, April 4, 2025

My older brother, Paul, and I are 18 months apart. Paul has multiple disabilities, including epilepsy, and his journey has been one of remarkable resilience. As a toddler and young child, Paul began experiencing tonic-clonic seizures. With the support of medication and exceptional neurologists, he was able to achieve seizure freedom by the age of five. However, at 15, Paul experienced a recurrence of breakthrough tonic-clonic seizures. Despite these challenges, Paul remains the strongest individual I know. Now 22 years old, he continues to experience occasional breakthrough seizures.

Paul has dealt with his own fears, particularly the anxiety surrounding the possibility of breakthrough seizures and the physical consequences they bring. Together, we have been working to cultivate greater confidence in his ability to navigate these challenges, empowering him to lead a fulfilling daily life. As a sibling, I have faced significant emotional challenges, often grappling with concerns about my brother’s well-being.

Paul is deeply committed to raising awareness about epilepsy, with the hope that others who face similar struggles will not feel isolated in their experiences. Through his efforts, he seeks to foster a sense of community and support for those affected by epilepsy. The strength and perseverance displayed by Paul and others living with epilepsy are truly inspiring and serve as a testament to the remarkable resilience of the human spirit.

This experience has fueled my determination to advocate for a better future for all individuals affected by epilepsy. I decided to share our story upon learning about the remarkable work being done by the Epilepsy Foundation. Both Paul and I have always been passionate about the prospect of raising awareness and funding for epilepsy, and we realized it was finally the right moment to take action and get engaged.
