Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) has emerged as a major cause of mortality in epilepsy. Studies have shown patients and families overwhelmingly want to know more about SUDEP. We have heard many healthcare providers want to have the conversation, but don't know how. Discussing SUDEP with patients and families requires both knowledge regarding relative risks of comfort with counseling patients and families on this difficult topic.

Presented by The American Epilepsy Society and Epilepsy Foundation SUDEP Institute

Learning Objectives

  • Counsel patients and families regarding SUDEP as appropriate for the level of risk related to the individual patient's epilepsy, increasing patient and family understanding of the disorder and improving adherence to treatment recommendations.
  • Incorporate established techniques for counseling patients and families in discussions of epilepsy and its potential consequences, providing opportunities for improved communications and patient / family understanding of risks associated with epilepsy.
