Hi... I began having grand mal seizures in my sleep back in 1997. now I am told I have partial seizures, as I feel it coming on am awake but just can not stand or communicate. Its like my mind was entirely erased and I cant form a single thought or word. It lasts maybe up to 5 minutes but thasts the only evidence. I have done a sleep study eeg and mri within the past month but have not seen the neurologist yet. Has anyone else went from grand mals to partial? and exactly what partial seizure is it? with all this info out there I cant find one that describes being are but no repetitive movements or anything. Thank u

A grand mal seizure is generally a generalized tonic clonic seizure. Meaning it covers your whole brain.Partial seizures can also be known as focal seizures. Focal seizures start in one area of the brain and can affect the area that part of the brain controls. For me mine have always started with my right hand feeling weird or numb. They can last from seconds to a couple of minutes. In mine I look like I am daydreaming. But if I was in a conversation I could hear and understand what was said. My answer came out after the seizure was over. Now there are several different partial seizures. Partial, Simple partial and Complex partial. In those you can do other things and not remember doing some of them. They can also generalize and when doing so look like a grand mal only you are aware of everything happening you just can't control what is happening. They can even move farther and become a grand mal where you lose consciousness.
