Disabled Vet With Epilepsy/Seizure Disorders

Thu, 02/05/2015 - 19:30

I'm a disabled vet with epilepsy/seizure disorder's due to a TBI in the Navy in 1976. I have been denied numerous times by the VA for a service connected disability. They say because i can function and to hold down a job, and because there's a gap from 1978 to 2010 when i had my last grand mal; i'm denied. Also a neurologist needs to provide a link between my head injury and the seizures through the years to the present. That has been hard to find. Between this period i've experienced which ever kind describes the experiences of: staring only once or twice, numerous and varied times of limbs erupting in my sleep causing accelerated heart rate, adrenaline rushes. This was in the begining at least once a week; and now has decreased to a couple of times a month. Even though i can function normally to a degree; there have been times of equalibrium being off and i actually fell a few times against the wall. I've caught myself mumbling upon starting sleep mode. The headaches which occured after the head injury have come back. They feel like someone has driven a spike through my eye going to the back of my head and they last anywhere from 5 min to a couple of hours. I  will be following up with this seeing my primary care. I feel that in my case, the seizures are unpredictable having 2 in 1987 to 2 in 2010 with the other occurences in between. I drove a tow truck for 7 years as well as my personal car; and i feel i'm lucky to not have blacked out and possibly killed myself or someone else. I am on public transportation now and will stay there. I get 2 warning signs of light headiness and a strange metallic taste in my mouth, and within seconds i'm down and out cold. I awaken later in the ER with no memory until it slowly returns. I'm told this is common with seizures where you black out. In the meantime, i will continue to fight the VA.

The TBI should be all that is

The TBI should be all that is needed. Did they run an MRI> If they did then did they find any damage to your brain in any way. If you were knocked out for a few seconds or minutes it could cause  hemmorage to the brain. Thet hemmorage to your brain can cause scared brain tissue. The scared brain tissue might be causing the electrical impulses to go off wrong.(abnormalities).While I was not in the military I do know what caused my epilepsy. The diagnosis was done back in 1960's. My current Doc did them again. The difference was back in the 1960's the hemmorage was before or after birth. The newest testing states it was between the years of 6-8. When I was 7 I had a fall which knocked out 4 teeth. Before slamming my head into the bottom rail of bunk beds My head hit the top rail spinnng it. I know I was out for a few seconds. Check with your meurologist and see if a new MRI can find anythng that might be something like this
