Unreasonable professors...
Tue, 09/28/2004 - 03:12I was put into a lower level math class because I didn't do well on my math placement test for college. So it's been a couple weeks now and I'm dying. It's a class in which you cannot use calculators and you are going back to the basics. Easy math. But for some reason I just can't do it. When I do my homework I pretty much get it. But when the test is handed to me I just can't do it! I try to concentrate and remember but everything just gets more clouded and I get soo stressed out.
I've failed all the tests I've taken so far and there are only so many weeks in the semester so if you don't pass you have to take the course all over again. Well, my teacher today was reading off names of people who had to retake tests..I've taken the first chapter test twice and failed it. I have to take it again tomorrow.
She was like "okay you have to take that and..OH MY GOD...UGH!" She realized I didn't pass the chapter test after that either and had this really frustrated angry look in her eyes fixated on me. And I do have the disability statement which I gave to her from the head of the disability department. I don't even think she remembers.
So now I am going to just go up to her and be like "look..I know I've been doing badly on these tests but there is more to it that meets the eye. I have epilepsy..meaning I have seizures which are triggered by stress. I'm getting so worried and upset over all of this that I feel like I'm going to have a seizure any day now. I keep studying but for some reason I just can't seem to get it when I have to take the exam. And also..my mother who is a pediatric E.R. nurse and works with two of my neurologists knows that constant stress of trying to solve problems and calculations are even triggers that cause seizures".
Which I could not believe until I read it! I should check if it is on this site. Anyway, the bottom line is that this woman is not being understanding and now I have to tell her about my seizures just so she can get scared I'll take action against her (and oh how I know I can). I don't want to be in this situation but I feel like it's slowly happening. First with her, and who's next? I'm so stressed!

Hi.
I'm sorry she's showing lack of understanding towards what is a stressful time, without her 'lack of understanding attitude' as well to think about for you as well.
Get her to read this.It applies in her case.it really does.I send my best wishes that you do pass this exam.
As a teacher, gaining information about epilepsy can be beneficial to you and the child. Some of these children can experience confusion, lack of concentration, poor attention, poor processing abilities, irritability, or behavioral problems. It is important as a teacher not to immediately assume this behavior is the personal character or behavior of the child (NSE 3).
