Keppra

Fri, 10/23/2015 - 16:46

Hi there!

I'm a sixteen year old girl with JME. About a month ago my doctor added 500 mg of Keppra to my medication list, (which includes 750mg of depakote daily, 50 mg of  lamotrigine twice a day, and 25 mg of folic acid).

It was alright I think until he pushed the Keppra to 750 mg. I'm a junior in high school, and last year as a sophomore I performed well and was able to balance all of my homework and grades even on top of a very busy marching band schedule.

I'm no longer in marching band and my schedule this semester is pretty easy, so one would assume I would be doing well. But no. Ever since starting the higher dose of Keppra I've become lethargic, VERY irritable, EXTREMELY stressed, and kind of just downright weird. I don't like it.

Is anyone else on Keppra having these problems? I'm aware that anxiety, lethargy and irritability are common side effects, and I'm unwilling to go off the medicine because it has improved my condition a bit.

So my question stands as thus: does anyone have any recommendations (ie exercise, diet, weird-gypsy-herbs) that help improve these side effects until my body can adjust to the chemicals flooding it?

My 6 year old daughter had her first seizure at school last week. Since has had one every three days totally 5. We started Keppra. And she is not my same child anymore. Acts drunk or quiet and unoppinenated. Will I get my sweet girl back again? She has a twin. These changes in her personality are hard for her to see as well.

Ok so if your on Keppra and Depakote (Valproic Acid) - I'm on the same drugs..  it's acruelly the lamotragine  that's interacting with your Valproic. I'm suprised your Neurologist didn't take you off of the drug before starting you on the Lamotragine. As the Canadian pharmaceutical companies say your not supposed to mix the two together.  Surely he/she would have known this?  As for the folic acid.. I suggest you start a B50 or B100 complex with folic acid in it.  Also when you next see your Neurologist ask to be taken off of the Lamotragine. Abd put on topomax or something that fits your seizures better.
