First seizure?

Tue, 05/11/2010 - 01:54

Hi everyone.

I think I had a seizure on Sunday morning. Background info: I'm 17, recently stopped antidepressants (without doctor's opinion because she's a moron and I really can't be bothered with her) and I have an eating disorder.

I'm not quite sure if it was a seizure (or maybe I'm just trying to tell myself that it wasn't) or what caused it. I had eaten just before and it had been over a week of stopping the antidepressant, Citalopram (no noticed withdrawal effects). I got up from the sofa to let the cat in and my vision went black before I had a chance to even let go of the door handle. My stomach kind of started tensing and relaxing quite quickly. I remember hitting my head on the door handle as I tried to get myself balanced. When my vision came back I was crouched on the floor, leaning back against the patio doors.

I haven't told anyone because I don't want them to worry if it turns out to be nothing... And I guess not telling anyone makes it less real. I'm just really worried that it'll happen again (especially at school). And with exams coming up very soon, I'm even more scared than I think I'd usually be.

Any advice would be REALLY appreciated.

Amibarelyalive.

Sounds like fainting to me.  When you stood up suddenly your heart the blood pressure in your head would have dropped rapidly and the heart did not have time to compensate for it.  If you had immediately bent over and touched the floor, say, for a few seconds you  would have recovered almost immediately.  See if it happens again.

If you don't like your doctor, find another one...NOW!  Is she a shrink?  (I had to kiss a lot of frogs before I found the right one and he supervises both my anti-deppressant drugs and my anti-epilepsy meds.)

As for the depression: A study found that 80% of the patients with epilepsy were also diagnosed as having a depressive disorder. Upwards of 60% of these individuals had a history of significant episodes of depression.  And 10-32% experience symptoms of anxiety.

Also, crummy food habits and lack of sleep are major seizure triggers.  As is fluctuating blood sugar.

Here's my suggestions...

First, FIND A NEW DOC, PRONTO!

Second, keep a daily diary of what you eat, your activities, when you sleep and what these episodes (if they happen again) feel like when they start, during the episode itself and then after.  That might give your NEW doctor a clue of what's going on with you.

Third, don't keep this a secret.  You need some help and support here.  I wouldn't suggest you go it alone.

Good luck and let us know how you do...     Phylis Feiner Johnson   www.epilepsytalk.com
