Annoyed with my epilepsy

Wed, 06/06/2018 - 22:55
Hi I’m 12, but I’m going to turn 13 in 12 days. I’ve been having seizures since I was a baby. My parents said my first seizure was when I was 6 months old. I’ve been living with it since then. They were pretty bad when I was little 6 months-7 years old and then they started getting a little better (I didn’t have them as often anymore). But then when I was 11 I tried playing softball and I was having seizures almost everyday (and the days I wasn’t having seizures I was ALMOST having them) my dad took me out :/. And now I’m having them a little more often (like I could used to go like a year without them but now I have at least one a year with close calls). My dad says I have seizures when I get too hot (hence exercising isn’t good). I don’t even know what kind of seizures I have cause my doctor has never told me. Here’s a run down of what happens during a doctor visit: Asks if I’ve had any seizures Takes blood pressure Doctor comes in and taps my joints Talks a bit Leaves And now I’m just super annoyed with my epilepsy. It’s been limiting what I can do. I’m not allowed to exercise or play sports. I can’t go on big rides or do fun things (I had a seizures ice skating, I think due to increased heart rate from being scared), I can’t do anything. Not only have I been having more seizures, but I also have panic and anxiety attacks. I literally had one just yesterday. I just want them to go away. I don’t know if they’ll ever go away

I feel you dude. I've had them since I was 9 months old. I am 24 now. My parent's kept a baby monitor in my room until I was 13 and forbid me from swimming on the off chance I might have a seizure and drown. I had a seizure in school about every week until I had brain surgery when I was 11. It's hard to make friends and it's definitely done it's share of social anxiety. However, wait a few more years and epilepsy will definitely do its share of benefits for you. College rolls around and epilepsy makes you a great candidate for every school and every scholarship.(got me into Berkeley and $10,000 in local scholarships) Even though epilepsy isn't a learning disability, college will offer you numerous accommodations like: more time on tests, people to take your notes, a golf cart for transportation and MOST IMPORTANTLY priority registration for all your classes.( your friends will say " that cool wine class has a wait list of 20 kids or that's a required plant class everyone needs. how did you get in? Dude, you're with the disability center, they give you the earliest time on the first day and you'll get into EVERYTHING!)  And after graduation, the government and large private corporations need their share of disabled employees and you qualify for ALL OF THEM. Just like a veteran, most government departments are always looking.(and numerous people are willing to help you find one) So, I know it's no fun but people are definitely more understanding later in life and it will definitely have it's benefits later in life.
