Upcoming VNS Surgery for my daughter

Tue, 06/09/2015 - 18:25

Hello, this is my first post. My 18 year old daughter will be getting a VNS device in August. We're concerned about side effects and if this will really help her. Does anyone have any thoughts to offer us? Thank you.

Hi, I'm 21 and I got VNS transplant just last month. Each time I get it turned up, that day I will get a pain shoot through my jaw. Not unbearable. It only lasts for just the first day and then my body gets used to it. I rarely even notice when it goes off at this point. I mostly only notice it if I am speaking because it makes my voice hoarse. Since it is new I don't know yet if it will help me though I've met two people that have had it. One said it didn't work for him, the other said it changed her life. The more I read the more it really looks like a case-to-case basis on whether it works or not. I hope it goes well for her!

I am also keeping track of this thread, because my husband's neuro is also recommending this. If anyone has considered VNS and then whether you've gotten it (or not) I would love to hear your reasoning and thoughts. Am new to the epilepsy world and not sure this is the path my husband should be on.Any help is appreciated.

Okay- I'm not going to be a debbie downer but the surgery is rough. I had mine placed last week and I will honestly say I would NEVER do it again! I just hope that when they turn it on....again.....we do better and i don't want to die due to the pain. This is also the newest Aspire that they placed. Just make sure you weigh your options. Good luck.
