Has VNS actually helped anyone?

Tue, 05/19/2015 - 12:04

Hi all! This is my first post here but i'm researching for my DH. He had surgery 15 years ago and he was fairly controlled with meds. Then last year he went toxic on his lamictal and had to go down on it. since then his seizures have been out of control and meds (currently on 4) are not keeping him seizure free. He has had surgerical consults at a center near where we currently live and at where he had the original surgery done. Both have said no to surgery because his seizures are no longer localized. They have both said they can do VNS, but statistics are iffy on whether it actually helps are not (finding data that says either 50/50 or only 1 in 4). So looking for real life people who have had the surgery. Did it eliminate the seizures (with meds) or just reduce them or nothing? Are you glad you tried the surgery? Any information or insights would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

I am also keeping track of this thread, because my husband's neuro is also recommending this. If anyone has considered VNS and then whether you've gotten it (or not) I would love to hear your reasoning and thoughts. Am new to the epilepsy world and not sure this is the path my husband should be on.Any help is appreciated.
