Epilepsy Surgery at Tampa General Hospital

Tue, 09/01/2015 - 14:45

Hello,

Has anyone on here had Temporal Lobe surgery at Tampa General Hospital by Dr. Fernando Vale?  They have confirmed that I am a canidate for this surgery and are setting me up an appointment with him. I have had Complex Partial absence seizures for 26 years (now 46 years old) but was never pointed to surgery until a couple of years ago.  My eptilepologist says that the siezure foci is well determined in the left lobe and that my memory and language is all in the right lobe. I have left hemisphere Schizencephaly which is believed to have caused my right hemisphere to take over for memory and speech.  So things look promising that the surgery would remove my siezures. Any comments would be welcome. Paul

Hello Paul, I did have the brain surgery from Dr Vale in Tampa General Hospital. I have had seizures since I was 13 and I am now 46 also. Funny that we are pretty much the same on that, lol. The surgery went well as far as the recovery but the outcome didn't. I loss basically. Mine didn't work. I still have seizures unfortunately. I have other side effects that stem from the surgery that I feel like I can't control. My emotions are unreal. Ups and downs. they may not even be from the surgery; who knows. All I do know is they seem to be even worse since the surgery itself. Just make sure you are ready to take on ANYTHING after the surgery. BAD OR GOOD. I wish you luck my friend

I have four types of epilepsy

I have four types of epilepsy but I am not a candidate for surgery because mine is genetic. Over the years I've gone to several doctors and the best place that I've received treatment for my seizures is at UF Shands in Gainesville. Another option is to try the Cleveland clinic in Tampa I've heard that they are excellent. Good luck in your quest for getting the best treatment. Keep us posted, I hope everything goes well for you.
