Smoking cannabis

Fri, 09/13/2019 - 04:37
I am 21 years old, got diagnosed about 18 months ago. I suffer from tonic-clonic seizures and my trigger seems to be alcohol withdrawal. So the day after a heavy night drinking I will suffer from these. I have stopped drinking completely and haven’t had a seizure since. I have booked to go to Amsterdam in a couple of months and would like to know whether smoking weed is more likely to cause a seizure or are there some of you who have found that it helps your seizures?

Hi meghaz98, Thanks so much for posting. Please talk to your doctor about these questions and your individual treatment plan. It’s important that you recognize that alcohol withdrawal can be a trigger for you. https://www.epilepsy.com/learn/triggers-seizuresModerate to heavy alcohol use is never recommended for people with epilepsy. Alcohol and some seizure drugs have similar side effects. Using both at the same time can lead to bothersome and potentially dangerous problems:  https://www.epilepsy.com/learn/triggers-seizures/alcohol The effects and risks of so-called recreational drugs vary greatly, they may directly affect the brain and seizures, or interact with seizure medications:  https://www.epilepsy.com/learn/triggers-seizures/drug-abuseLearn more about medical marijuana and questions to review with your healthcare team, here: https://www.epilepsy.com/learn/treating-seizures-and-epilepsy/other-treatment-approaches/medical-marijuana-and-epilepsy Being diagnosed with epilepsy can be upsetting and make you feel isolated and alone. However, it’s important to remember that you are not alone and one of the most important things to help you live with epilepsy is to find a support network.
