Our child has had a 90min, a three hour and a five day EEG without catching a partial. Some partials are too deep (some people will never show anything on regular EEGs, some can see stuff if they add those leads that go in your nose, our child’s neurosurgeon, who is the epilepsy guy to see for a few states around, says even iEEG are really dependent on placement), some seizures are not strong enough to show up, and sometimes there just isn’t one during an EEG. There is activity associated with partial seizures that may show up, we’ve seen that. Still, even without seeing a seizure on EEG, the history and reports of events after starting medication (and increases where we didn’t tell our child the dose changed) were all consistent with partials. Still, seeing the generalized seizures show up on EEG after many years was a surprise (we were looking for partials but the frequency wasn’t quite enough to show up even with the fast wean, the generalized seizure activity was becoming nonstop as med levels lowered). That’s why working with a neurologist who specializes in epilepsy is just better because they know more about the different presentations and testing limitations.

Hello Amy JoThank you for your reply.  The reason why I ask is because j our child 9 years old has had a 3 day video eeg and we were allowed to leave the hospital told the report would be ready in 3 weeks. I suspect they didn't see any activity of concern as we were not told anything.  A little background our son has been having funny smells (usually burning rubber or something disgusting) he feels like he's on a roller coaster or elevator where it feels like a funny feeling going from his stomach to his throat.  He also has macropsia and micropsia which I'm told are visual hallucinations. He gets headaches and dizziness but not sure that this is part of seizures. Epilepsy runs in the family but the grand mal seizures which one person has unfortunately died from.
