Lamictal level

Tue, 09/19/2017 - 19:21
Hello I am taking lamictal XR 300mg. I had a blood test done and the doctor said that everything was ok. He just looked at the results fast and said everything looked fine, but then I was given at the clinic a copy of the results and it says that my lamictal XR level is 14.0. Is this level ok? Then I also read that eGFR is >60, when the average for a 18-29yr old should be 116 or higher. It also says that I'm close to getting anemia and it also says that the kidney shouldn't be 60 or lower. What I don't understand is why the doctor says everything is ok and yet still wants to increase my medication level when the results don't really seem ok. I live in Hawaii and there aren't a lot of helpful neurologists. I will be traveling to California to visit my fam and I was wondering if anyone knows a good neurologist there.

The doctor wants to increase

The doctor wants to increase your medication because they want to find out the highest dose your body can tolerate and be seizure free.  Your lamictal (AKA lamotrigine) levels are high for your dosage.   I have a level of 15 and I take 600 mg/day of lamotrigine ER, 300mg in the morning and then evening.   Have you read the physician insert that came with your prescription?   Keep a diary that records any side effects, i.e. seeing double.  When my blood plasma hits a lamotrigine level of 17 I start to spin and have trouble walking. When in California, find an epileptiologist at a higher medical institution, i.e. UCLA, UCSF.  You need to establish a relationship so the next time you are on the mainland you can start the journey to figure out more about your seizures.   FWIW:  I had my first seizure when I was 13.  I have complex partial seizures of the temporal lobe, caused by poly-microgyria of both the left and right temporal lobes.  It took 31 years of tests and medications to find this diagnosis, and I have been seizure free for about 5 years on Lamictal ER, 300 mg in AM/300mg in PM.
