How long can an aura last?

Fri, 12/21/2018 - 21:46
I was diagnosed with generalized epilepsy. I've been seizure free about a year and a half now, but i'll get these strange feelings every once in a while that are hard for me to describe. From what all I've looked up and seeing other people's experiences that are similar to mine I believe they might be auras... However these feelings sometimes last a little while. I was wondering how long can an aura last if it doesn't lead to a seizure?

Probably something to speak

Probably something to speak with your neurologist about. I say that because technically an aura is seizure activity. As a result, the length, relative to what it used to be at some point, will give the neurologist a better idea as to how to assess it.Try to keep notes, such as the date and time and if so, the length. That way you can compare data. Best Regards

MSREVOI've had similar auras

Submitted by Billyghosttown36956 on Wed, 2019-06-19 - 04:42
MSREVOI've had similar auras myself for 19 years. Never knew until last August when a new neurologist actually listened to me for 20 minutes describing them and all the trauma I have had in my life. Anyway,  that would be a book right now so I'll skip the details. 5 years prior after thinking I was about to have a heart attack, stroke, or whatever, I saw a cardiologist because heart defects and attacks are common on my mother's side, and 3 of my brothers, 2 younger, have all had at least 1 open heart surgery. Was told after rigorous testing that heart is ok. Then I thought maybe the main blood supply to brain was clogged a little, for lack of better term. So got an ultrasound done and negative on that. So anyway, they both reccomended that I see a neurologist,  so I did. I actually had two heart checkups where you wear the heart monitor for 24 hours and then they analyze the results. The first one was done sometime in 2010, I think. Test concluded no problem. I think, that's because I didn't have a spell in that 24 hour period. So for another 3 years or so, they kept happening. In summer 2000, when they started, they would last 15 to 45 seconds. I, not knowing if I was going to keel over with a heart attack or stroke, began to get concerned. Then in winter of 2013, I decided to have a follow up visit at cardiologist. Again, treadmill and all that stuff and another 24 hour heart monitor, more sophisticated than the last one. At that visit, he recommended to see neurologist. He sent referral to insurance and did have visit, two weeks after 2nd monitor results that came positive. In 23 and a half hour wearing monitor,  I had a spell that I thought last 25 minutes. Cardiologist called and told me that for 17 minutes while that spell lasted, my heart was beating at 175 beats per minute. This was really important news when I went to the neurologist office. But he only spent 5 minutes and said, try this pill, Depakote ER 500mg. Said it helped one patient with similar problem. He said take 1 pill for 7 days, then take 2 per day after that. The 2nd day after working a normal 10 hour shift at army base and 30 minute ride home, I went under my car in the garage and was leaning over to see wear to put my floor jack. Then I got real dizzy and thought I was about to faint. Next morning I called neurologist and he said, better just stick to one pill. Ok, I did. Spells were about 80 % contained for 4 years. Then June 2018, I took off work for triple hernia surgery and decided to see another neurologist. Depended on who insurance company referred me to. This time I saw a women neurologist. She is very nice and spent 20 minutes listening and talking with me then told me that I was definitely having petite mal seizures. She ordered an eeg and set appointment for that the said to increase the Depakote to 2 pills again, but this time. Immediately start taking only a half pill extra for 2 weeks, then increase to 2 pills a day. Did not get dizzy this time. Before I saw her in August,  2018, the spells were happening about 3 times a week and sometimes I was out of it for 45 minutes. I was conscious about what was going on through any of the auras other than being scared to death. When this began happening a lot at work I knew I better get help fast. I worked with a partner and he would cover my butt while I disappeared into an armored vehicle and set battle locks til they passed. Very scary. I went through a very traumatic auto accident on Thanksgiving Evening in 1978. I was 17 years old and passenger in my dad's 1961 Ford Starliner with my younger brother driving. A 1978 Camaro was traveling at 80 mph being chased by the Anaheim, CA police because she was wanted on a warrant for an open container violation. We were traveling the speed limit at 40 mph heading east, just approaching a medium size intersection and she was traveling southbound. She broadsided the driver's side door between fender and door hinge. We were not wearing seat belts because my dad just had the car upholstered the day before and they weren't installed yet. The door popped open and my brother fell out onto the street and bumped his head, a concussion.  Then the car veered off to the right east corner of intersection and hit a 4 ft tall DON'T WALK sign. That put a gaping hole in the windshield and I was plunged into the side of the hole with the left side of my face.  My face was cut open deeply through a major facial artery and was shooting blood three feet with every heartbeat. Four front teeth in dash and a conical hole drilled in the left side of my nose. I don't remember 2 hours before or 3 days after that accident to this day. I was told that I died for a bit 2 times in surgery.  My father was told by a nurse that they might as well go home because i probably wouldn't make it through the night. My dad slapped the nurse hard enough to knock her over and told her that's not her place. It's God that is in control.  We didn't have insurance because we were a

We were almost at poverty

We were almost at poverty level. I had stitches from 2 inches above forehead to an inch below chin. It missed my left eye by an eighth of an inch. The left side if my face was paralyzed for almost two years. 5 years before the left eyebrow moved up when the right did. Hospital wanted to keep me for 2 weeks. I thought, we can't afford that. Less than 4 days I was home. Went to work 2 weeks later at a manufacturing company. About 4 worker's on my shift called me Franky as a nickname.  I ignored them as long as I could. After 1 year I had a nervous breakdown maybe PTSD, not classified in 1979. I was in and out of mental hospitals for 8 years. They gave all kinds of experimental drugs to me, unwillingly while constrained on gurneys by all 4 s. Back to the seizures,  and lady neurologist.  She thinks that and many other traumatic times in my life is a probable cause. Even though my mother says a had a number of tiny seizures as a child. I hope this helps somebody if not but one person I'd be happy. I could go on about the last year with triple hernia surgery. Mesh rejection,  9 months of hellacious pain before surgery this March to remove it. Wound opening again. Disability running out 5 days a go, because California has 1 year only. Have surgeon appointment June 28, 19 to see if can be released to work. Bla, bla, bla. My well motor and pressure tank inlet pipes went bad about February 2019. Costing $3000.00 on credit card of course. I was laid off work while supposed to be on fmla August 9,2018,  health insurance cancelled August 31, 2019. Now paying 500 month and high copays with money we don't have. All this stress is not helping. Was diagnosed again, with bipolar disorder that hasn't been a problem since the eighties.  Day before surgery on 3/27/19, neurologist called and said Depakote level was a bit low. Increase a half pill daily then well see. I have to, in August when I first saw her, she filed with CA DMV and my licensed was suspended.  Got back day before last Christmas. I am almost at the end of my rope and don't know how much more I can take. It's said that God won't give us anymore than we can handle. He must think a bunch of me because I just feel like Job in the Bible about now. Don't really have anyone to talk to about my problems but God, my neurologist, and mental health clinic I just started seeing June 7th, this year. I take 1500 mgs of Depakote daily as of yesterday's neurologist visit due to down moods because of bipolar now. Bye for now. Billy
