CTE and Epilepsy

Fri, 01/19/2018 - 12:29
I have been living with epilepsy since age 16. I collapsed following a football workout and woke up in the hospital that afternoon learning I had a seizure. I am now 28. I have been on many medicines. I take a lot of medicine morning and night, Keppra XR, LaMotrigine, and Zonisamide. I use Midazolan (Versad) and ativan to control my outbreaks. I have been reading about the rise in CTE studies. I played contact football from age 5-18, anyone know an article or doctor info about a connection between CTE and epilepsy? Thank you.

Have you tried checking wiki????https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_traumatic_encephalopathyConcussions can cause bleeding on the brain. That bleeding if not taken care of can cause scar tissue. That scar tissue can make electrical impulse hit wrong in the brain. That wrong hit causes a chain reaction (the seizure). So studies are still being made and rules are changing in many sports. Helmet to helmet blows are now against the rules and other things that have been used before. Generally CTE in not known until there is an autopsy. Talk to your neurologist about this issue an MRI might show something like scar tissue but today pro football players have been finding out about several different thing that can affect them after years of playing football.

Hello, I recently watched a program on CTE.  It was on 60 Minutes if I remember correctly.  Any way there is a study going on out of Mt. Sinai hospital in NY.  It’s mostly for veterans.  I called about my son who is 23 and they told me that he was to young but they would put his name on the list in case they lowered the age and received additional funding.  Try calling 212 241 1844.  The study is being run by Dr. Sam Gandy.  Hope this helps.  I also think my son has Cte he played football and suffered concussions as well as had a TBI as a result of hitting his head when he had a seizure.  You should also try searching the NIH. National Institute of Health.
