Alcohol induced Seizures

Wed, 01/31/2018 - 23:08
Hi Everyone, This is my first time writing about my experience with seizures. Growing up I never had signs of epilepsy and never thought that something other than epilepsy can cause you to have a seizure. I was young when I had mt first one & (not promoting underage drinking nor was I going through alcohol withdraw from addiction) I was out with friends one night when I was 17 (keep in mind in my case it wasnt the first time! Every now and then I liked a good party!) And nothing seemed out of the ordinary... Until I woke up the next morning severley twitching... About a half hour later I was in my Dads car on the way to the Hospital. From there I went through a series of brain scans and test - not showing any signs of uderlying epilepsy. I thought I learned my lesson until about a year later I had a few beers with friends and the same thing happend the next morning. In my case, its like a countdown ... Ill twich every half hour, then every 15 minutes then bam! Seizure. Ive cut out drinking and I am not on any epilepsy medication as the Neurologist couldnt find the cause. Does anyone else suffer from Alcohol induced seizures? Is this even a thing? Thank you for taking the time to read this and any advice will help!

went through a series of brain scans and test - not showing any signs of uderlying epilepsy. <<< brain scans show what the brain looks like. If your brain looks like a normal brain then they didn't SEE anything on it that can be th cause. If the tests were blood an ECG and other tests done in the ER then you may not have had one of the tests used to find out if you have epilepsy. The main test is an EEG which is a brain wave test showing the electrical activity in your brain at the time it was being done. If they did that and during the test they did not see spikes. waves abnormalities or epileptiform then it came back normal. That does not mean you  do not have epilepsy. It means during the test they did not see activity that was not normal. What causes a seizure? A seizure as an electrical impulse hitting wrong in your brain. That wrong hit causes a chain reaction which is the seizure itself. I had 20-25 different EEG's that all came back normal. It was a EEG that was about 15 minutes longer that I fell asleep in that they saw abnormalities in. By seeing where they came from the neurologists then went to the MRI and looking in the area that those abnormalities were from they found scar tissue on my brain. Now if you didn't tell the neurologist about your first seizure and they are just working on the information received after that last seizure then they might not have wanted to medicate you. Generally all it takes to diagnose epilepsy is 2 seizuresnot on any epilepsy medication as the Neurologist couldnt find the cause. <<< There are a lot of people that have epilepsy that no cause can be found. That does not mean they don't have epilepsy and they still have seizures. Yes alcohol can induce seizures in some people. Which is probably why the docs did little to find the cause or they didn't run  longer EEG. As for alcohol induced seizures. Yes there re many people that drink and have seizures caused by their drinking. Your first seizure could have been one. However you do need to research triggers in the learn section since stress and or alcohol can trigger seizures in some people. Most good neurologists will either say NO ALCOHOL others will limit drinking to a drink every 4-6 hours. Beer is different and you may drink one every few hours but after the second none for 6-8 hours. That didn't mean I didn't party with friends, It did mean I limited my drinking. I nursed my beer nd glasses of wine/ I also informaed the bartenders that I was to drink only 1 alcoholic drink so anything after that drink needed to be non alcoholic. Which meant that the people around me who bought me a drink bought me one that had no alcohol in it. I had great times and yes we closed down bars and clubs. You do need to find a neurologist that specializes in epilepsy and talk the them. Medication can stop breakthrough seizures from happening. Right now you may have epilepsy and your own bodies therapeutic levels are stopping them except for times you drink.
