1st Tonic clonic

Mon, 03/25/2019 - 09:49
Hi I am not diagnosed with epilepsy as at the age of 51 I only had a first seizure 2 weeks ago and taken to hospital. I’m hoping just a one off as after having just one I cannot imagine how you all manage when this is recurring. I have only just started to feel better today 16 days on. Have been confused unsteady and very dizzy when I move my head and at bed time my room flips I just wanted to know if anyone thought their 1st time was a one off as I am a little worried it will happen again I had a tonic clinic seizure in the middle of a car park. I know nothing of it except the large lump on my head but the lady who saw me said I was wondering around looking very confused then started jerking face contorted then I passed out hitting her car and then backwards onto road and seizure lasted 2 mins I also lost bladder control

Hello AJP hope you're still

Hello AJP hope you're still checking this site.  I have been diagnosed since I was 15.  Now at 33 the I still have epilepsy and the Tonic clonics can be tuff and have always caused a longer recovery time for meI have have had very similar situations.  including bladder control.  The confusion and dizzyness could be from petit mal seizures which eventhough they can be the most annoying just because you're thinking about whats going on.  They are a lot easier on your body now that we are older.  As far as managing the recurring situations its a matter of what works for YOU the meds are much better these days so as long as you take what you're get perscribed even by a mediocore neurologist.  STAY HYDRATED this is very important because the seizures can drain our bodies fluids.  Always keep in mind that a tonic clonic or grand mal seizure is causing you to use every muscle in your body for 2-7 minutes.  Its very close to the amount of energy you would be using playing a 3 hour football game just not as much fun.  Please feel free to ask ANY other questions that you think I can answer.  Just to be clear I am not a doc just have epilepsy.  Good luck in the future.   I would like the reccommend though if you have time to sit down and think about what was different, say like a month leading up to the first tonic clonic.  Things along the line of amount of sleep, things that have been stressing you out, and yes hydration.

Hi AJP,,I hope you are

Hi AJP,,I hope you are feeling better now. Its a real nightmare waking up after a seizure in hospital. I've been there more than once as a result of seizures. At your age its possible the seizure was triggered by a combination of things occurring simultaneously. If you consumed excessive alcohol, took drugs, became very aggressive and dehydrated and in the same 24 hour period got less than 3 hours sleep, this might have caused your seizure. So, if alcohol is a problem for you, I'd give it up immediately and the same goes for non prescription medication. I also suggest you improve your diet by eating a lot of fruit and vegetables, a small amount of lean meat and fish, and only tiny amounts of sugary and fatty foods. Eggs and low fat milk, yoghurt and cheese are also good along with plenty of water and a small amount of caffeine. I suggest you cut out caffeine after midday as you should get at least 8 hours sleep every night and exercise regularly. A 45 minute walk every day is ideal. All these things will help minimize your risk of another seizure. All the best.
