Zonisamide - switching from generic to Zonegran

Thu, 06/26/2008 - 14:18

My 3 year old son Blake was diagnosed with epilepsy last month after a tonic clonic and now daily myclonic jerks.  He was put on zonisamide (started at 75mg) which seemed to make the myclonic jerks less severe but they are still occuring daily (2-3 times per day).  We had heard it might be better to go on the name brand (Zonegran) which we just switched to 5 days ago, but the seizures now seem to be coming more frequently.  Has anyone had that experience while switching from a generic to a name brand?  Or any other comments on zonisamide/Zonegran?

Hi!  I'm new to this site & all these posts...but SO glad I've found them.  How did things work out with Zonisamide?  I was put on it a year and a half ago and in under a week I had to switch to the brand name Zonegran.  I felt like I was walking on a boat out at sea...my balance was off, my thoughts were all fuzzy...I was a WRECK!!!  Once I switched to the brand name, all that went away...don't EVER tell me that brand name and generic meds are the same...no way!  I've had the same experience with Lamictal.

Anyway, I hope the medications you are on now are working well.  If you want to chat about any of your meds, though, I'd be happy to.  I've been taking Lamictal since '94 - VERY happy with it, but we are trying to find an add'l med to prevent migraines & absence seizures.  I've just started on the generic of Keppra, so we'll see how that goes and I'm going to tell my dr. I want to stop taking Zonegran all together.  It has been a terrible medicine for me.  (Although I have to give it credit for helping me to lose the 85 lbs that Neurontin caused me to gain...).

Take care,

Paige
