Seizures when sleeping!?

Thu, 06/15/2006 - 12:48
My son is 9 and has absence seizures. He has never had a TC seizure and our neuro said that he could at any time. That spooked my wife and me. He is having seizures frequently right now. He had 7 in a 30min span this morning. We are starting him on a low dosage (300mg a day) on Keppra. We took him off of Lamictal because it wasn't working. My concern is what if he has a TC seizure at night. Would I know? Should I be concerned? What if it last too long?

Hi, My advice would be to get a baby monitor for night time. We have heard our son having seizures during the night with ours. We don't have a video one, but I've seen other comments on this site from people who use them. As far as your concern about the seizure lasting too long, our son's neurologist gave us a prescription for Diastat. We have never had to use it, but it's there just in case. You might want to check into this further with your doctor. Good luck.

Hi! My kiddo has had several cluster seizures as well as seizures during sleep. We have diastat since cluster seizures can be dangerous. As far as sleep goes, the monitor has alerted us to the seizures. He is just two, so we were already using the monitor anyway, but I heard the faint gurgly noises he makes when he has the siezures. I keep mine where I can see the light moving, so that if I hear something, I can watch the lights and sometimes they tell me more if he's just moving around since they are more sensitive than my hearing. I would look into getting the diastat, at least to give you peace of mind. But if he does that again and you don't have the diastat you should get him some help. Clusters can be bad. Also let your neuro know that he's having these if you haven't already! Good luck!

We do have diastat actually. The baby monitor is a good idea. He is 9 and I am concerned that a baby monitor might not come off real well from his perspective. I can't think of what else I could do. Thanks a bunch.
