Preschool doesn't want to take my daughter in

Tue, 06/19/2018 - 18:56
Hello! I am new to this forum and I am looking to see if anyone has had experience with what we are going through right now. My 3-year-old daughter had grand mal seizure that turned into status epilepticus in February. Since it happened we have had all different examinations done and we have been told that she is not epileptic and that seizure was most likely caused by flu that she had at the time, but because of the nature of her seizure, and the severity of it she has to carry emergency medication on her at all times in case she has another one. She was suppose to start preschool for the first time in September, she was registered and everything so I told them about this development and they told us that they won't be able to take her in because they cannot legally administer the emergency medication to her in case she needs it. Only register school nurse could and they don't have one on stuff. I am completely heartbroken by this. I had no idea about this "legal rule". I did search and there are no preschools in our area that have registered nurse on stuff so my husband and I don't know what we will do. We want she to go to preschool because we want her to socialize with other children and to learn the separation from us. Did any of you have this happened to you and what did you do? Any comment would be really appreciated!

I think a private preschool

I think a private preschool can decline enrollment for any reason but if a preschool takes public monies, they cannot discriminate on the basis of health. And the people who can administer emergency meds may be dependent on state laws. Call your local epilepsy foundation affiliate and talk to them about what the current laws are in your state. An older but still helpful reference for epilepsy is at http://www.wrightslaw.com/advoc/articles/epilepsy.manual.pdf but it might help you understand some issues that could impact what help schools might have to provide and the reasoning behind that.
