Our seizure journey

Sat, 10/07/2017 - 11:34
My little guy is 18 months old as of 10-7-17 and he started having seizures out of nowhere late September sorry I don’t know the exact date. He is teething (molers)and as a mommy I think that could be playing a role as that’s just my thoughts. I think he is going though growth spurs again trying to tie all of this in together. He was on Colazapan for a week after being released from the hospital they also sent home with him Keppra and Trileptal. Poor baby still has brake through seizures even with those that’s what makes me think it could be his teething and growing since mri and eeg came back normal. I had to give him the rescue med as the doc ordered if he has a seizure even if it last a couple of seconds as he was having multiple seizures that again lasted a mere few seconds as of 10-6-17. I’m wondering has anyone had any of these experiences as we have or am I being optimistic through all of this.

That sounds like a pretty

That sounds like a pretty recent change, it’s a lot to deal with emotionally and there’s a big learning curve. While I haven’t had your exact experiences, I am a parent of a child with epilepsy. Our child’s seizures are not obvious.  I had to learn a lot about epilepsy to get my head around it. While there are febrile seizures that occur with a fever that aren’t epilepsy, there are people with epilepsy who are more likely to have seizures with a fever. The teething and growth spurts hypotheses sound like you still are dealing with the initial denial, which is normal early on but one can’t stay  in denial. Normal MRIs happen a lot for people with epilepsy. Normal EEGs also happen for people with epilepsy. There’s no certain test, it’s often the history and when they are lucky, they get something on EEG. There are different kinds of EEGs so your doc may suggest a longer test. There will be some people who do not get anything on regular EEGs, the system has physical limitations. What kind of doc you are working with will matter if seizures aren’t controlled within a certain timeframe. It’s best to work with a pediatric epileptologist. Look at children’s hospital rankings in us news and world report, they rank neurology and neurosurgery together. You may be near a well ranked hospital and you may need to explore how to get a referral there.

Normal MRI's come often. If

Normal MRI's come often. If they do not see anything different then it is normal. Anything different would be looked at closely. I know they found scared brain tissue in the test they used before the MRI.As for seizures while they are teething. Yes that can happen because babies generally get a fever when teething. I have to watch it when I get a sickness of any kind. Colds, the flu or anything. It takes time for the therapeutic levels to build in his body so you aren't seeing breakthrough seizures. Seizure meds are not like aspirin where once taken they are gone after a number of hours. It generally takes 3-4 weeks for the therapeutic levels to build on the body. That level is the level that can and will generally stop breakthrough seizures. You need to get a pediatric neurologist that specializes in epilepsy

Thank you for your reply. Yes

Thank you for your reply. Yes I have been diligent about checking his temp often and so far he is not running a fever. I understand that it takes time to get the med to start working in his system but I think like you said I want it to work now. Yes I am working with a children’s neurologist and doing what is asked for my sons treatment. I am hoping that his next MRI and eeg come back normal. Have you had any experience with low blood sugar causing these seizures? I know as an adult I get shaky when my blood level is low because I haven’t had anything to eat. Sorry I think I’m just thinking out loud. Again thank you for your reply.
